Ledbetter Business

Ledbetter business series is about the documentation of a neighborhood before a wave of gentrification.  This series is an exploration of what gets lost when developers and new communities move in to an area and it is often said: There was nothing here.  And when people say there was nothing there  this is a project that aims to celebrate the local people and the business that exists and document what is there.

Who opened a business there?
What business came to them?
What did the community care about?
How many years in business? 20 years or more?

Exploring the signage of the neighborhood the series examines.

  • It’s a marker that let’s the community know what is available.

  • It’s a marker that let’s the community know what it cared about.

  • It’s a marker that let’s the community know what is needed.

  • It’s a marker that let’s the community know what it valued.

Who decides value?
Who decides what makes a neighborhood?
